Sophie Turner is going to reprise her role as Jean Grey in “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” but her character, like the title implies, is going to take a darker turn this time around.

Turner revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she studied personality disorder and schizophrenia in order to effectively portray Jean Grey as she struggles with the intensity of her powers. Aside from that, she also gave up partying so she would not mess up her scenes.

“I think I had like two nights of proper partying and on a five-month shoot that’s not very much,” she said. “It was funny the first night that I went to bed early we were all at like this big group dinner and I had to work the next day and I was like, ‘Guys it’s 9 p.m. and I really have to be in bed.’ All the producers were so shocked because they know me and they were like, ‘Are you okay?’ You only really get one shot at something like this. I was like ‘I cannot mess this up with a hangover.’”

In the movie, Turner would be joined by several of her “X-Men: Apocalypse” co-stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Mystique. Lawrence’s return is actually a pleasant surprise, since the actress earlier said she’s done with Mystique.

Lawrence previously said she does not want to paint her body blue anymore. But she could not say no to producer Simon Kinberg when he asked her back.

“I kind of [expletive] myself,” Lawrence said. “Because when I was trying to talk Simon into directing, he said something like, ‘If I direct it, you have to do it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course! Duh!’ Then they offered me the movie, and I was like, ‘[expletive]!’” She quickly added, “It was the fan base, though, too — the other reason was for the fans.”

But the decision to return was worth it for Lawrence because Kinberg outdid himself as a director. “Acting-wise it was the best experience I’ve had [on these films]. He’s been writing these characters for so long and he knows them so deeply. I suddenly felt more connected to my character than I ever have been before,” she said.

“Dark Phoenix” is slated for release on Nov. 2, 2018.
