- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has opened an aggregate 5 percentage-point lead over President Barack Obama in 12 battleground states among likely voters, according to a USA Today/Gallup poll.

- Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan is heading back to Virginia on Tuesday, with campaign rallies scheduled at Automated Conveyor Systems in Lynchburg and Celebrate Virginia Live in Fredericksburg.

- Romney’s campaign raised $170 million in September. Romney and the Republican National Committee have raised more than $700 million this election cycle; a huge portion of that figure comes from conservative super PACs and outside spending.

- The Justice Dept. filed papers seeking to dismiss a lawsuit from the GOP-controlled House of Representatives that would force Attorney General Eric Holder to turn over documents related to the Fast and the Furious gun-tracking operation.
