Update: Will Ferrell released a statement to Entertainment Weekly on April 2 announcing that they would no longer be moving forward with the Lifetime movie.

Just when you thought Lifetime movies couldn’t get any crazier. Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig have secretly filmed a Lifetime movie that will act as a sort-of parody of the network’s films in order to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy duo will star in the two-hour movie titled “A Deadly Adoption.” The story is billed as a “dramatic thriller” in which a couple that hopes to adopt a child allows a pregnant woman, played by Jessica Lowndes, to move in with them so they can care for her. However, being a Lifetime movie, things go awry.

If the plot of this campy spoof sounds familiar, that’s because it’s already been done – by Lifetime no less!

A movie titled “The Last Trimester” (but also billed on IMDB as “Deadly Adoption”) came out in 2007 with roughly the same plot. As the film’s description on the network’s website reads:

“Eric (Jim Thorburn) and Tracy Smythe (Chandra West) arrange to adopt the baby of Gabby Paige (Lara Gilchrist). However, after the birth of the baby, Gabby is found murdered. Tracy suspects her husband and works with Detective Nick Hanford to find the truth.”

It’s unclear at this time if the Ferrell/Wiig collaboration will be a direct parody of this original movie, but it certainly seems like it given the title, plot and fact that it's the perfect fodder for a spoof. According to E! Online, Ferrell is said to be a pretty big fan of the over-the-top genre that Lifetime has cultivated for itself and will likely be leaning on a lot of heavy-handed tropes. Meanwhile, his co-star has already parodied Lifetime in a one-off joke on “30 Rock.”

In it, Wiig plays the role of Edie Falco’s character, CC Cunningham – who was shot by a dog and forced to get plastic surgery in the fake Lifetime Original Movie, “A Dog Took My Face and Gave Me a Better Face to Change the World: The Celeste Cunningham Story.”

While we wait for whatever the comedians have in store for their film, which has already been shot, fans can get a sense at the “thrilling drama” that can be expected based on the original “Deadly Adoption” trailer. Also, if you don’t mind spoilers, read the cuckoo bananas plot description here.

"Deadly Adoption" is being produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. The script was written by "The Spoils of Babylon" writer Andrew Steele.
