Dell announced on Friday that an additional 200 thousand batteries need to be recalled, expanding the initial recall the firm placed in August.

To ensure that all potentially affected batteries are identified and returned to Dell, the company is requesting that customers recheck their batteries if they have not ordered or received a replacement battery, the company said in a statement.

The company was the first PC manufacturer to recall batteries provided by Sony Corp. after a potentially hazardous manufacturing defect was discovered. The problem could cause some laptops to spontaneously explode.

Dell issued its first recall on August 15, 2006, and Apple Computer, Toshiba, and IBM have followed suit.
