Following Julianne Hough’s public apology regarding her decision to wear blackface at a recent Halloween celebration, the actress' big brother has stepped forward to defend her.

In an interview with E! News on Monday, Derek Hough, who appears on "Dancing With the Stars," spoke out about the widely circulated images of Hough dressed as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren from the Netflix TV series “Orange is the New Black.”

"It wasn't her brightest moment,” Hough, 28, said.

“She's my little baby sister and she's the sweetest thing ever. She's so apologetic. She's so so sorry and I just hope that we can all forgive her and move on." He added that his sister is "beyond beside herself” following the public backlash.

His comments follow an apology released on Twitter by the 25-year-old “Safe Haven” actress on Saturday, just hours after she was photographed wearing the controversial costume at a Beverly Hills, Calif., get-together on Oct. 25.

“I am a huge fan of the show ‘Orange is the New Black’, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,” Julianne Hough said. “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.”

While fellow celebrities and fans alike have since bashed the actress for her costume choice, her brother said that he hopes the public can forgive her mistake. “Obviously, it wasn't her brightest moment in her life, but hopefully we can move on," he said.

Julianne is currently in preproduction on the Iain Softley thriller "Curve," alongside "Battleship" actor Drew Rausch. Her brother is competing on season 17 of ABC's DWTS with "Glee" star Amber Riley.
