It's over for Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly. A rep for the New York Yankees shortstop and his Friday Night Lights actress girlfriend confirmed the split to People magazine Thursday night.

They care about each other and it was amicable . . . they're still friends, a source told the magazine.

Kelly, 31, who was previously linked to John Mayer and Chris Evans, has been dating Jeter since May 2008. The couple kept their relationship relatively private over the years, with Kelly appearing at the occasional Yankees game or parade float.

The actress was most recently spotted in the stands at Yankee Stadium when Jeter, 37, got his 3,000th career home run this summer.

In late-July, Kelly appeared on the HBO documentary, Derek Jeter 3K, celebrating the athlete's career leading up to his record-breaking home run.

When I met Derek, I didn't know anything about baseball at all . . . I didn't know the difference between a run and a homerun, Kelly said in the documentary.

She's lying . . . she had a poster of me on her wall when she was in high school, Jeter later joked.

Kelly next stars in the TV reboot of Charlie's Angels. The new series premieres on ABC on Sept. 22.
