Destiny 2 was revealed in gameplay form Thursday afternoon, but so far we’ve only seen it on PS4 Pro and PC. Given the large number of Xbox fans out there, everyone’s curious about Scorpio. Will Microsoft’s high-spec console play it any better? According to mirroring statements from IGN and ICXM, we’ll have to wait until E3 2017 for more details on that front.

That being said, Bungie’s official words do offer a pretty solid baseline for what to expect. A producer attached to the project confirms that “Destiny 2 will only run at 30 fps on consoles.” It was also said that “they can’t talk about Xbox One, Project Scorpio and what advantages it brings over the standard console until Microsoft’s E3 2017 press briefing.”

So what does that non-confirmation tell us about Destiny 2’s Scorpio version? Nothing in an official capacity, but the clear assertion of “30 fps on consoles” is important to reiterate. Project Scorpio is just as much a console as PS4 and PS4 Pro, so we can assume from this very specific phrasing that its base framerate will be locked at 30 as well.

There are a few reasons why pushing to 60 fps on Scorpio just doesn’t make sense. The biggest issue being that any difference would cause massive headaches for online multiplayer. Those playing at 60 fps on Scorpio would have a clear gameplay advantage over those on a standard Xbox One. With such a connected, communal game like Destiny, Activision can’t take the risk of alienating any players. Especially not when it’s marketing Destiny 2 as a game for everyone.

There’s also that established Destiny-Sony partnership to consider too. Doubled framerates on a competitor’s machine seems like too much of an advantage for the PlayStation team to allow. PS4 Pro will be advertised as the premier Destiny 2 console, so you can’t have the actual numbers sending a widely different message.

The only area where there might be some latitude is, of course, resolution. Bungie has officially said Destiny 2 runs at 4K on PS4 Pro, and most analysts agree that feat likely involves some kind of checkerboarding or upscaling to compensate for hardware bottlenecks. Considering Scorpio is substantially more powerful than the Pro, it wouldn’t be unthinkable to suppose we may see native 4K on Scorpio. After all, Microsoft is really trying to push Scorpio as a native 4K machine. It’d be a strong call for Microsoft to have Activision reveal that Destiny 2 will embody that vision too. Plus, the difference between checkerboard and native isn’t huge enough for Sony to get upset about it either.

The way we see it, Destiny 2 on Project Scorpio will likely be a mirror image of the PS4 Pro version or possibly slightly better. Anyone expecting massive leaps ahead of that should probably start managing those aspirations now.

Destiny 2 comes to PS4 and Xbox One Sept. 8, with PC possibly arriving at a later date. Microsoft’s E3 2017 press briefing is on June 11 at 5 p.m. EST.
