Fans weren’t sure what was going to happen when Beyoncé performed on stage at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, but it was what happened after that shocked many. She and husband Jay Z have been plagued by divorce rumors for months, but her husband stood by her side when he presented her with the Vanguard Award.

It was unknown who was going to give Beyoncé the award, and it seemed even the singer was shocked when her husband joined her on stage with their daughter Blue Ivy in his arms. He called the singer “the greatest living entertainer” and then handed her the award.

The “Drunk in Love” star greeted her husband with a kiss and a hug. “I’m so full,” she said. “I have nothing to say but I’m full with so much gratitude. I just thank God for this moment. I love y’all so much. Little Blue, I love you. My beloved, I love you. To my fans, I love you. MTV, I love you. Good night.”

Before the awards show at The Forum in Inglewood, California, rumors swirled she was going to address the gossip surrounding her marriage. “Beyoncé wants to tackle the rumors in the best way she knows how: on stage,” a source told HollywoodLife.

“During her performance, she is looking to do something to hopefully silence all the haters and the critics but, in true entertainment fashion, to make even more questions come out of it. She wants to make a statement that people will be talking about for a very long time.”

The couple has been flooded with divorce rumors since May. Recent gossip claimed the celebrity duo was going to split after their tour “On The Run” ends in mid-September. The rapper has been tied to other artists like protégés Rihanna and Rita Ora.
