Some American athletes may have let USA down in snowboarding and speed skating at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, but in ice dancing, thanks to Meryl Davis and Charlie White, they’re breaking records, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The pair took the gold medal in ice dance on Monday, the first time an American team has ever won that title. This time around, the 2010 champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada took silver. Russia's Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov won the bronze.

At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Davis and White took the silver. Strangely enough, the duo trained in Detroit with this year’s silver medalists Virtue and Moir. So what happened that allowed for the American team to triumph over the Canadians? Well, another four years of training and help from Emmy-award winning “Dancing With The Stars” choreographer Derek Hough.

The five-time Mirror Ball champion told People magazine he was “so happy” for Davis and White after their big win at the Sochi Games. "I've been rooting for them the whole time. It's just unbelievable. I'm so happy for them. It couldn't have happened to two nicer people," he said.

Hough worked with the duo last year for their “My Fair Lady”-themed performance, which they turned out nearly perfectly at the Olympics. He said he is “proud” of the progress they made from the 2010 Games. "I could feel from their energy," he said. "Being so close to gold four years ago made them definitely want to bring it home this time. I'm so proud of them. I was so honored to help them and be a part of the process. It's amazing to see them performing and representing America and for me to be a part of it in a small way."
