In Season 2, Matthew came out as gay. But even though he’s admitted to being attracted to guys, Matthew also confessed that he still occasionally thinks about his ex-wife. Talking about Williams’ casting, series creator and cast members Julie Klausner said that they felt it made perfect sense for Trish to be played by Williams.

“It just seemed very obvious that Matthew would be married to Vanessa Williams. We love her and we want Trish to be someone who was completely gorgeous and someone who had like a really, really big heart, and we wanted somebody who would have great chemistry with Cole, which the two of them completely had,” she said.

In Season 3, Trish will return to New York in an attempt to reunite with Matthew. Despite their decision to go their separate ways, Trish knows for sure that she’s still in love with her estranged husband. However, Escola shared that Cole and Trish’s reunion will be pretty messy.

The actor also unveiled some information from the time he and Williams filmed their scenes together. “There was not a lot of talking and we had to be very intimate very quickly. We do a lot of crazy physical stuff and she was so game for it. Three days later, I was still trying to wash the smell off of me,” he joked.
