"Doctor Who" Season 8 premieres on BBC America on Aug. 23. BBC

The new Doctor is here! "Doctor Who's" Season 8 premiere is right around the corner, and the synopsis for episode 1 has been released. Fans are not going to want to miss what is in store for the BBC America sci-fi show.

The coming season will feature a new "Doctor" as the Season 7 finale saw the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith, regenerating to use the energy to defeat the Daleks. He turned into the 12th Doctor, who will be played by Peter Capaldi ("The Thick of It," "In The Loop"). According to the synopsis, the premiere episode will feature Clara dealing with the fact that "her best friend appears to have changed completely." Fans might remember that Season 7's ending scene had Capaldi's 12th Doctor putting Clara on the spot about her piloting the crashing TARDIS. The two will have to learn to work together as they battle a new and terrifying monster in the season premiere.

BBC America recently released a new teaser trailer for the Aug. 23 premiere.

The new season will also feature a revolving door of guest star appearances. Fans can look forward to seeing Keeley Hawes, Tom Riley, Samuel Anderson, Foxes, Neve McIntosh, Frank Skinner, Hermione Norris and Ben Miller.

The anticipation for the new season and new Doctor has not been without drama. The popular British show has had a hard time keeping this season's secrets under wraps with the scripts of the first five episodes getting leaked in early July, followed by another leak of the first two full episodes online.

Lucky fans will have the opportunity see the premiere early during a limited theatrical run, while most will have to wait for the Aug. 23 premiere on BBC America.
