Although a lot of viewers today know Victor Garber for his portrayal of Dr. Martin Stein, also known as one-half of Firestorm, on “Legends of Tomorrow,” the actor doesn’t worry about being typecast as his superhero role because he makes sure that he’s taking on different characters from time to time.

“I was very conscious when I was young of not being typecast because when I started out I was in music. I was a singer and that was all I did,” Garber told TV Guide (via Stuff.co.nz). “Then I did musicals in New York. I was consciously picking things that would be different. That’s what is always interesting.”

The Emmy-nominated actor admitted that he thought about typecasting when he decided to jump into the superhero genre.

“I thought suddenly that would be it — I would be known for this because this has such a huge impact on the fans,” the 67-year-old Canadian actor said. “It could be true, although I have just finished doing a part in a film about J.D. Salinger.”

Being able to play a different role when he’s not portraying Dr. Stein on “Legends of Tomorrow” is an important thing for Garber as an actor.

“It was heaven to have spent seven months on The Waverider, and then suddenly to be in the world of J.D. Salinger. That variety is what I want,” he said.

According to Deadline, Garber plays J.D. Salinger’s father, Sol Salinger, in Danny Strong’s “Rebel in the Rye” — a biopic that follows J.D. Salinger as he prepares to write his classic novel “The Catcher in the Rye.” Nicholas Hoult plays J.D. in the film, which is slated to be released next year.

Next week’s episode of “Legends of Tomorrow,” titled “Justice Society of America,” airs on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. ET. Check out the synopsis for Season 2, episode 2 below:

Nevertheless, the Legends force their way into the JSA’s mission to intercept and seize a mysterious package. Nate (Nick Zano) is desperate to prove that he should be part of the team, but he has a secret that he shares with his grandfather Commander Steel (Matthew MacCaull) that might make it difficult. Meanwhile, Stein has stepped in as the leader with Rip (Arthur Darvill) gone, but when decisions aren’t being made Sara (Caity Lotz) seems to be the one calling the shots.”
