Diamond Pet Foods, a Missouri-based pet food manufacturer, has issued a recall and suspended production on its dog and puppy dry food because of possible salmonella contamination. The latest recall comes from the same plant that produced mold-contaminated food when dozens of dogs were killed nationwide in 2005.

According to a statement from the company, which is under Schell and Kampeter, Inc., the recall includes the Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food and Diamond Puppy Formula produced in a Gaston, S.C. plant. Production has now been suspended after one bag tested positive for salmonella. Four other production codes have been recalled as a precaution, Diamond Pet Foods said.

So far, no illnesses have been reported in dogs. However, Salmonella can affect both pets and humans who handle the contaminated food, especially if they do not wash their hands or if it comes in contact with a surface. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever and can result in serious illness,

The contaminated products were distributed to customers in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

Diamond Pet Foods said it suspended production on April 8 in South Carolina after multiple recalls were issued. The company also issued a recall on April 6 for its Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food.

We've taken swift action and suspended production, Diamond Pet Foods spokeswoman Janine Smiley said in a statement. We take quality issues very seriously and will resume production when we can assure that our products meet our stringent quality standards.

Diamond Pet Foods said customers should discard all foods included in the recall and not feed it to their dogs.
