Sen. Bernie Sanders called for an independent and thorough investigation Wednesday into Michael Flynn’s contacts with Russia and on whether Russia had coordinated with Trump and his campaign.

"We need to know whether our president's foreign policy represents the best interests of this country or the best interests of Russia," the Vermont senator wrote on Twitter.

Sanders also explained why he believed the investigation was necessary.

Sanders, the longest serving independent in U.S. congressional history, had been critical of Donald Trump during the election campaign and continues to do so after the latter took office. Here are some of Sanders' most recent comments on Trump.

1. "Our job is to do two things - to defeat Donald Trump and to elect Hillary Clinton. It is easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face if we are living under a Trump presidency." — Sanders said in July at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

2. "We have a president who is delusional in many respects, a pathological liar," Sanders said on NBC's "Meet the Press" last Sunday. "I know it sounds — it is very harsh. But I think that's the truth. When somebody goes before you and says that 3 to 5 million people voted illegally… nobody believes that. There is not a scintilla of evidence to believe that, what would you call that remark? It's a lie. It's a delusion."

3. Sanders, in an interview with CNN early this month, was asked to comment on Trump's first steps to dismantle the Dodd-Frank financial regulation that was set up in 2008 to prevent another economic crash.

"I don't mean to be disrespectful. This guy is a fraud. This guy ran for president of the United States saying, 'I, Donald Trump, I'm going to take on Wall Street. These guys are getting away with murder and then suddenly, he appoints all these billionaires. His major financial adviser comes from Goldman Sachs. And now he is going to dismantle legislation that protects consumers," he said.

4. According to Sanders, Trump has been focusing on immigration more than other important issues in the country. Sanders added that Trump has not been keeping the promises he made during his election campaign.

"There's a whole lot of discussion about the racist, in my view, immigration policies of the Trump administration, which are based on anti-Muslim ideology, which are doing us enormous harm all over the world — something else is going on at the exact same moment," he said on "Meet the Press."

"Trump is backtracking on every economic promise that he made to the American people when he told workers and senior citizens he was not going to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid."

"He's appointing Wall Street bankers, the same people he told us he would oppose, to very high positions ... we're talking a whole lot about dividing the American people up. We're supposed to hate Muslims, we're supposed to hate Latinos."

5. On Trump's promise to "clean the swamp" of Washington politics, Sanders said:

"Meanwhile, he was going to clean the swamp. Remember that?"

"Well guess who's running the swamp right now. The same exact Wall Street guys from Goldman Sachs who were there in the past. So we're all talking about who do we hate tomorrow? Is it the Muslims? Is it Latinos? Who are we supposed to hate?" Sanders said.
