Dow and S&P 500 turn negative; banks weigh

The Dow and the S&P 500 briefly turned negative in late morning trade on Wednesday, led by losses in financial stocks.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 8.55 points, or 0.07 percent, at 12,272.13, after dipping into negative territory to a session low at 12,262.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was unchanged at 1,314.16, off a session low at 1,313.10. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 14.53 points, or 0.53 percent, at 2,759.32.
