That's right the Dow Jones Industrial Average kicked off the month of October in fine form by celebrating a record-high close at 14,087.55. This marks the Dow's second close above 14,000 ever, with the first such close occurring on July 19 (when the blue-chip average muscled its way to a 14,000.41 finish). The Dow beat a steady path higher in today's trading, rising nearly 192 points by the close despite a downbeat profit warning from Citigroup (C) this morning.
United Technologies (UTX) has the honor of turning in the highest gain among the Dow's 30 components, adding nearly 2% after announcing it would acquire Dome-Tech Group. Boeing (BA), McDonald's (MCD), and Exxon Mobil (XOM) also notched some healthy gains in today's session. In total, 28 of the Dow's 30 components advanced. Only General Motors (GM) and AT&T (T) ended the day in negative territory.
Checking in on our other broad-market indices, the S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,547.04) closed on a gain of 20 points, and the Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,741) rose nearly 40 points. The small-cap heavy Russell 2000 Index (RUT 824.74) maintained its foothold above the 800 level with a gain of almost 20 points.
