- U.S. stocks rose on Friday, with the Dow industrials briefly rising more than 1 percent, as robust commentary from some retailers reinforced hopes of an uptick in consumer spending in the holiday season.

* Earnings and outlooks from JC Penney and Abercrombie & Fitch Co overshadowed an early November reading on consumer sentiment, which hit its lowest level in three months.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> gained 94.01 points, or 0.92 percent, to 10,291.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> rose 8.97 points, or 0.83 percent, to 1,096.21. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> jumped 18.86 points, or 0.88 percent, to 2,167.88.
