Stocks have shown a notable move to the upside over the course of afternoon trading on Tuesday, with the major averages moving well off their worst levels of the day. While profit taking contributed to some early weakness, selling pressure remained subdued.

The upward move is partly due to considerable strength among computer hardware stocks, with electronic storage stocks posting strong gains. While railroad, steel, and brokerage stocks have also moved higher, weakness remains visible among trucking, health insurance, and gold stocks.

The major averages have continued higher in the past few minutes, with the Dow and the S&P 500 climbing modestly above the unchanged line. The Dow is currently up 14.49 at 7,790.35 and the S&P 500 is up 0.21 at 832.13, while the Nasdaq remains down 10.16 at 1,545.61.
