The Dow and the S&P 500 rose on Thursday, breaking a three-day losing streak, as data on the job market and regional manufacturing revived hopes that the recession-hit economy is stabilizing.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> rose 57.59 points, or 0.68 percent, to close unofficially at 8,554.77. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> gained 7.64 points, or 0.84 percent, to 918.35. But the Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dipped 0.34 of a point, or 0.02 percent, to 1,807.72.
