Stocks fell on Wednesday, with the Dow and S&P 500 extending losses and the Nasdaq turning negative after an Austrian parliamentary committee failed to approve the European Financial Stability Facility upgrade.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 94.57 points, or 0.85 percent, at 11,011.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 8.15 points, or 0.69 percent, at 1,164.72. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 7.80 points, or 0.31 percent, at 2,524.35.

Equities had opened higher after the head of the European Commission said the body will present options for joint euro zone bonds, a tool that investors view as a step forward to addressing the region's debt crisis.
