The Dow and S&P 500 indexes each fell more than 1 percent, led by materials and industrial shares, in afternoon trading on Wednesday, while the Nasdaq turned negative.

U.S. Treasuries also fell.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 92.87 points, or 1.10 percent, at 8,380.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 7.71 points, or 0.85 percent, at 902.62. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 4.28 points, or 0.24 percent, at 1,746.15.
