Stocks pared losses on Friday, with the Dow industrials and S&P 500 trading flat as energy and basic materials shares, the sectors that suffered the worst hit on Thursday, rebounded.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> edged up 3.14 points, or 0.02 percent, to 13,049.28. The S&P 500 Index <.INX> dipped 0.13 point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,392.65. The Nasdaq Composite <.IXIC> fell 7.95 points, or 0.26 percent, to 3,055.37.

At the day's low, the S&P 500 fell more than 0.4 percent.
