Downton Abbey Season 5 promo
"Downton Abbey" Season 5 released a trailer full of scandal and danger. Could Downton be burned to the ground? Nick Briggs/Carnival Films 2014 for MASTERPIECE

A new promo for “Downton Abbey” Season 5 has arrived, and it looks like everything is changing. The promo plays Gabrielle Alpin’s “Salvation” as it flashes through brief glimpses of Season 5, including the first look at Richard E. Grant and Anna Chancellor’s new characters (and it's certainly more dramatic than that water bottle promo photo).

Lady Edith declares, “The world is changing.”

The changes are unspecified, but it seems like it might be related to romance. The promo shows plenty of courtship and kisses and it all looks so scandalous -- but quick clips don’t allow fans to see who exactly is in these scenarios. However, it is clear Lady Mary is definitely making flirty eyes at a certain character. Branson also appears to have a new romance with an unseen partner (perhaps with Lady Mary?). The promo gets even more scandalous when Mr. Carson appears to walk in on Jimmy in bed with a woman. It might be Lady Anstruther, who is seen at another point in the trailer telling him, "You're a very naughty boy."

Of course, not every scandal is romantic. Plenty of secrets are being kept and they might put certain characters in danger.

“I have a secret. A bad secret,” Mrs. Hughes says.

In another scene, Thomas says, “This house has no secrets.”

In yet another brief clip, the Earl of Grantham worries his grandchild will be stolen. Downton is never short on secrets, but could these secrets lead to a fire? Someone can be seen getting carried out of a room filled with flames, and the fire has the potential to burn the estate to the ground.

But fans can count on Violet Crawley to lighten the mood in Season 5 of "Downton Abbey." Of course the Dowager Countess of Grantham thinks servants are people but “preferably only on their days off.”

While the trailer doesn’t clarify exactly what is changing in the house, it emphasizes modernization.

“Downton is catching up with the times that we live in,” Mrs. Hughes says.

Mr. Carson replies, “That is exactly what I’m afraid of. ”
