Downton Tom Mary romance
Tom Branson (Allen Leech) hasn't had a real romance on "Downton Abbey" since Sybbie's (Fifi Hart) mother died. Could he move on with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery, not pictured)? Nick Briggs/Carnival Films 2014 for MASTERPIECE

“Downton Abbey” Season 5 has left Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) completely single. With Tony (Tom Cullen) engaged to Mabel Lane Fox (Catherine Steadman) and Blake (Julian Ovenden) off to Poland, it seems that Mary is without suitors. Could her next great love be one of her sister’s exes? Mary has been getting awfully close to Tom Branson (Allen Leech) throughout Season 5.

When Tom revealed that he had a job offer in America, Mary was not pleased. She said the news was like a “dagger in her heart,” which is pretty deep for Mary. However, Allen Leech seems to think that their relationship will never be more than platonic.

“I think Mary and Branson have become kindred spirits in the fact that they both lost in the same way, far too soon,” Leech explained in a Reddit AMA. “I think they are good friends; I could never see it moving past that. I think part of Tom will always be slightly scared of Mary.”

Also, Tom would need to stay at Downton for any romance to happen, and that's in question. He announced his departure for America in the last episode, and Leech wouldn’t say if that was about to change in the “Downton Abbey” Season 5 finale. When a fan asked if Tom would appear in Season 6, Leech told them to talk to the writers.

“Petition [‘Downton Abbey’ creator] Julian Fellowes!” Leech wrote. “I think Branson's home is Downton Abbey, and I hope Julian thinks so too."

Many fans love Tom, so they obviously want him to stick around, and the cast and crew might have their own reasons for wanting Leech to stay on the show. It seems the “Imitation Game” actor is the only one who can tame the children and animals. “On the show, I'm known as the 'child whisperer' because I can get the kids to do what they're supposed to in scenes. The same goes for the dog,” Leech revealed.

Unfortunately, that might not be enough reason for the writers to keep Tom at Downton. Tom’s fate will be revealed in the “Downton Abbey” Season 5 finale.

The Season 5 finale of “Downton Abbey” airs Sunday, March 1, at 9 p.m. EST on PBS. Do you want Tom Branson to stay and strike up a romance with Mary? Sound off in the comments section below!
