A private funeral service for John Dineen, the late fiancé of “Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery, was held in Ballinora, Ireland, on Wednesday. Dineen was 34 when he died Sunday after a battle with cancer.

According to Us Weekly, the private service was held at St. James Church in County Cork. Close friends and family of Dineen attended the mass.

As People magazine reported Tuesday, Dineen had been in hospice care in Cork after battling a rare form of cancer he was diagnosed with earlier this year. Dockery is said to have been by his bedside, reportedly cutting short a promotional tour in the United States for the upcoming sixth season of “Downton Abbey.”

Following his death, Dockery’s publicist released a statement thanking her fans for the “support and kindness,” as well as asking for privacy for the 34-year-old actress to grieve.

Dockery and Dineen began dating in September 2013. People reports that the two were introduced by Dockery’s co-star in the hit PBS drama, Allen Leech. They got engaged in February of this past year.

Although Dockery is grieving herself, the Belfast Telegraph reports that she is going to “great lengths to support [Dineen's] family as much as possible.”
