South African gold producer DRDGold Ltd (DRDJ.J) said on Monday it had lost about 1 095 ounces of gold at its Blyvooruitzicht mine after a power outage caused by a lightning strike, trapped workers and halted output.

DRDGold said in a statement operations at its biggest No. 5 shaft at the mine had resumed at the start of the night shift on Jan. 22.

About 275 people, mainly maintenance and essential services workers, were trapped at various levels more than 2 km (1.24 miles) underground when lightning hit two electrical sub-stations causing a total power blackout in the No. 5 shaft.

The shaft is the Blyvooruitzicht mine's biggest producer, and accounted for about half of the operation's output last quarter. The mine's two other shafts have operated normally. The mine produced 32,054 ounces in the September quarter. (Reporting by Muchena Zigomo, Editing by Peter Blackburn)
