Mountain Dew and its parent company, Pepsi Co., launched a pretty pathetic attempt at a crowdsourcing campaign on Monday, called "Dub The Dew." Essentially, Mountain Dew and Pepsi wanted customers and fans to create, submit, and vote on names for the company's newest flavor, a "green-apple-infused beverage."
Mountain Dew had essentially lobbed up a ball for any decent troll, either from 4Chan or Reddit or elsewhere, to spike it back at the company. And that's exactly what happened.
On Reddit's homepage Monday morning, a user claimed 4Chan was trolling the competition. Conversely, 4Chan claimed Reddit was behind the prank. Tumblr user "curiefan" believes it may have been 9gag:
"Once this post reached the top of the front page on Reddit though something strange happened," Curiefan wrote. "After clicking the link the user was directed to the Mountain Dew website and a pop up box that said 'le 9gga are leggion' appeared... I kind of panicked, thinking it was a website with a virus or something. However, after clicking 'ok,' an embedded Youtube video of Rick Astley singing 'Never Gonna Give You Up' starts playing. There was also a marquee at the top of the page that says 'Mtn Dew salutes the Israeli Mossad for demolishing 3 towers on 9/11!'"
Digital news site HyperVocal doesn't believe the prank was 9gag, pointing to multiple threads on 4Chan's site that discussed the status of the prank, mentioning things like "Operation Gushing Grannies, Commence," and "Did we really vote for "'Fauplous Apple'"?
Here were the 15 top vote-getters from Mountain Dew's campaign, in order of most to least votes:
