Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich
Beginning on Friday, the glazed donut breakfast sandwich will be a permanent menu item at Dunkin' Donuts. Dunkin' Brands Group Inc.

With all the talk of sandwich innovation, Dunkin’ Donuts has made the logical step of replacing a bun with a doughnut for their breakfast sandwiches.

Dunkin’ Donuts will introduce the doughnut breakfast sandwich, which consists of a fried egg and bacon, as a permanent menu item on Friday, which it declares National Donut Day, the Associated Press reports. The company said in a statement, “Starting this Friday, DD fans nationwide can now experience the pure deliciousness of Dunkin’ Donuts Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich. This savory and sweet breakfast treat, which consists of a fried egg and cherrywood-smoked bacon inside a split glazed yeast ring donut for 360 calories, will now be a permanent menu item at all DD restaurants.”

Speaking about the doughnut breakfast sandwich’s creation, Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef and vice president of global product innovation, said in the statement Dunkin’ Donuts was experimenting with a sweet and savory combination into something “fun and quirky.”

Sweet and savory combinations have become a fashionable trend in the food industry -- salted caramel or bacon-chocolate combinations -- and, according to AP, the doughnut breakfast sandwich was tested in various Dunkin’ Donuts stores in Massachusetts in April. Although the idea of a doughnut breakfast sandwich may not fall in line with fast food chains aiming to deliver healthier menu options, the sandwich is relatively healthy compared to similar options.

At Dunkin’ Donuts, a bacon egg and cheese on a plain bagel has 460 calories and 11 grams of fat. Several items that are on the “DD Smart” line of healthy options have higher calorie content than the doughnut breakfast sandwich. The egg and cheese on a bagel has 410 calories and 7 grams of fat, while the turkey sausage breakfast sandwich on an English muffin has 390 calories and 17 grams of fat.

As for what goes best with the new doughnut breakfast sandwich, Frankenthaler recommends “a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts Original Blend Coffee.” For fans who may feel limited about the choice of meat or doughnut, Frankenthaler told AP the store would be able to accommodate a customer’s request for a different flavor or opting for a different meat instead of bacon.

In addition to the introduction of the glazed donut breakfast sandwich, Dunkin’ Donuts will be giving away free doughnuts with the purchase of a beverage during National Donut Day.
