Battlefield 4
A new game based on Frostbite 3, the engine behind "Battlefield 4," is expected to be unveiled by EA at this year's E3 Electronic Arts

In the lead up to the Electronic Entertainment Expo, also known as E3, Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq:EA) revealed during an investor earnings call on Tuesday that it plans to unveil several new games, including one developed on the Frostbite 3 engine.

Responding to a question regarding the status of EA’s upcoming “Star Wars” titles, EA CEO Andrew Wilson described “Star Wars: Battlefront” as “coming along very well.”

“There’s still lots of work to go. We do plan to show that and new projects in development at E3 this year,” Wilson said during the earnings call.

"Star Wars: Battlefront" was revealed to be in development after EA released a teaser trailer at E3 2013. While no specific release date has been confirmed, EA CFO Blake Jorgenson previously estimated a Summer 2015 release during an investor conference in 2013, according to Polygon.

According to prepared statements by EA, at least six new projects are expected to be unveiled at E3. No specific titles were named during the earnings call. However, the unveilings are expected to include first looks and demos among the announcements.

While several new games are expected from EA, the company explained that it also plans to launch fewer titles in fiscal year 2015, to focus on the development of “top-quality games.”

Among franchises not receiving a new game in FY 2015 is “NCAA Football” and “Need for Speed.”

The lack of a new “Need for Speed” game in fiscal year 2015 surprised some people. However, EA explained that they have given an extended development time to Ghost Games in Gothenburg, Sweden to work on developing a new high quality addition to the “Need for Speed” franchise.

Even with the scale back in the number of games set to release in FY2015, EA appears to be getting behind its unannounced Frostbite 3 title, which will be revealed at E3.

“If you don't have a Battlefield in a year, you've got a hole there that you have to fill,” EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said during the earnings call.

“That hole is essentially new titles along the lines of ‘Fifa World Cup,’ ‘UFC, a golf game, ‘The Sims’ and ‘Dragon Age. That fills about two thirds of the hole. The rest is filled by this new unannounced game,” Jorgensen added.
