This week, investors will hear from iPhone maker Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) on Monday and social network companies Facebook Inc. (NASDAQFB) and LinkedIn Corp. (NYSE:LNKD) on Tuesday and Wednesday, with all three reporting after markets close.

If Apple reports a decrease in earnings per share for the third quarter, it will mark the fourth consecutive quarter the tech giant has reported a year-over-year decline in EPS.

The S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) closed at a record high last week after getting a boost from technology companies, including Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN).

Of the 244 companies that have reported earnings to date for the quarter, 75 percent have reported earnings above estimates, according to FactSet. This percentage is above the average of 73 percent recorded over the past four years. In terms of revenue, 52 percent of companies have reported sales above estimates. This is below the average of 59 percent recorded over the past four years.

In sum, companies are reporting earnings that are 0.8 percent above the mean EPS estimate. This percentage is also well below the average of 6.5 percent over the past four years. If this is the final surprise percentage for the quarter, it will mark the lowest surprise percentage since the fourth quarter of 2008, according to FactSet.
