Expectations for Apple Inc. this earnings season is tempered.. Reuters

Expectations for Apple Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL) this earnings season is tempered. The tech giant will be reporting its third-quarter results on Tuesday and analysts are looking for a year-over-year decline in earnings. Revenue may fall flat, too. Blame the weaker iPhone sales.

Should Apple report a decrease in earnings per share growth for the second quarter, it will mark the third consecutive quarter that Apple has reported a year-over-year decline in EPS. One of the reasons for the decrease in expected earnings for Apple is the projected year-over-year declines in sales for both the iPhone (a drop of 3 percent) and iPad (a decline of 14 percent) product segments for the second quarter, according to FactSet.

Nearly a fifth of companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index have reported earnings for the second quarter, and things are already looking bleak.

Earnings for S&P 500 companies are on track to grow 1.5 percent from the previous year. That’s solidly below the 4.1 percent of growth analysts expected at the beginning of the quarter.

Of the 82 companies that have reported so far, 74 percent have beat analyst estimates for their earnings. Sales are on track to grow a relatively meager 0.9 percent this quarter, but that marks a sequential improvement from their 0.1 percent first-quarter decline.
