More earnings announcements will hit the tape next week.

Of the 296 companies in the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) that have reported fourth-quarter 2013 operating EPS, 198 have topped analysts’ estimates and 63 have missed, according to S&P Capital IQ. This has resulted in a beat rate of 67 percent.

Wall Street analysts expect earnings for the S&P 500 to increase 7.5 percent year-over-year, versus the initial estimate of 5.7 percent. “The optimism generated by fourth-quarter results that look as if they will exceed initial estimates by nearly two percentage points is offset, however, by the erosion seen in 2014 estimates,” Sam Stovall, S&P Capital IQ's chief equity strategist, said in a Feb. 5 note.

Capital IQ consensus now estimates project an 8.5 percent increase in full-year results, versus the more than 10 percent increase projected initially.
