Fourth-quarter earnings season will continue in full force next week, with big names like Microsoft, Starbucks and Johnson & Johnson scheduled to announce results.

Among the 6 percent of S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) companies that have reported earnings so far, only 48 percent of earnings are beating expectations, below the long-term average of 63 percent for a full season.

According to S&P Capital IQ, Wall Street analysts expect fourth-quarter 2013 S&P 500 operating earnings per share to rise 5.6 percent from a year earlier.

“If near-term history is any guide, for it is never gospel, the average difference between the beginning-of-quarter estimate and end-of-quarter actual has been 4.3 percentage points over the past 12 quarters, and 3.4 points during the trailing four quarters. Therefore, should fourth quarter actuals show a similar magnitude of outperformance, we could see EPS growth of between 9.2 percent and 10.1 percent, based on the Jan. 2, 2014 estimate of 5.8 percent,” notes Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, in a Wednesday note.

In the third quarter of last year, actual S&P 500 EPS exceeded estimates by only 2.3 percentage points, as earnings rose by 5.7 percent, versus the Oct. 1, 2013, estimate of 3.4 percent, according to Stovall.
