For all of 2014, some sectors will still be playing catch-up. Capital IQ consensus estimates project all but Telecom Services to increase earnings per share by less than that forecast for the S&P 500.

From month-end February 2009 until the end of 2013, the S&P 500 (INDEXSP:.INX) recorded a 151 percent price gain that was below its 175 percent recovery in EPS from the trough quarter in the third quarter of 2009 until the fourth quarter of 2013, according to Sam Stovall, S&P Capital IQ's chief equity strategist.

The S&P 500 Consumer Discretionary, Energy, Financials, Materials and Info Technology sectors also saw price gains that were equal to or less than the growth in EPS during the same periods. On the other hand, price increases far outpaced EPS growth for the Consumer Staples, Health Care, Industrials Telecom Services and Utilities sectors, Stovall added.

S&P Capital IQ maintains its bullish bias for the S&P 500 as it continues to climb into all-time high territory.
