A Pittsburgh man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend with Easter eggs and tried to hack at responding police officers with swords is facing simple and aggravated assault charges.

Aaron Goempel, 27, allegedly became enraged at an Easter egg-decorating party late Sunday night, accusing his girlfriend of cheating on him. That’s when he allegedly threw Easter eggs at her and locked himself in a bedroom with an exercise machine propped against the door, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Police who arrived on the scene noticed that the girlfriend’s eye was red and swollen, according to Pittsburgh CBS affiliate KDKA. She told officers that Goempel alleged she cheated on him and started throwing Easter eggs at her.

Officers eventually got through the bedroom door where Goempel barricaded himself inside, when the 27-year-old Pittsburgh man grasped for nearby knives and swords, but he wasn’t able to use the weapons on the cops, the Tribune-Review reported. Officers were able to restrain Goempel, who started hurling racial epithets at the officers and kicked one of the cops in the groin. Officers had to throw a pillow case over Goempel’s head in their efforts to restrain him, KDKA reported.

Goempel is facing simple and aggravated assault charges, according to the Pittsburgh CBS affiliate. The 27-year-old was being held in the Allegheny County Jail as of Sunday.

The charges aren’t Goempel’s first brush with the law, according to the Tribune-Review. He has a record dating back to 2008 that include guilty verdicts on disorderly conduct and public drunkenness charges. He also has a trial pending on assault, harassment, prowling and traffic violations.
