Interested in an egg-stuffed waffle? Taco Bell certainly thinks people might be down for that sort of sweet and savory breakfast item. According to Bloomberg.com, the fast-food giant owned by Yum! Brands Inc. (YUM) is trying out the new item at a “handful” of Taco Bell restaurants in Southern California that serve breakfast. But the company could potentially roll out the new food item to nearly 6,000 locations nationwide if tests go well.
The waffle, which will reportedly sell for 89 cents, gets rolled up just like a taco and then stuffed with scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, a little maple syrup, and a hashbrown, according to NBC News. Rob Poetsch, a company spokesman, said to Bloomberg.com in an e-mail: “We’re pleased with the initial reaction from our customers and if the Waffle Taco does well in testing, we’ll roll it out to all our restaurants that serve breakfast."
For those who didn’t even know Taco Bell offered breakfast, the Mexican-inspired chain began serving their FirstMeal menu about a year ago, even though the company is best known for attracting the late-night party crowd. Current items on its breakfast menu include the Crunchwrap and Cinnabon-brand doughnut bites served at 800 U.S. locations.
The new item started gaining attention earlier in the week when a photo of the breakfast taco went viral on Instagram thanks to foodies excited about the egg-stuffed waffle.
Taco Bell mainly competes with McDonald's (MCD), the leading breakfast-serving fast-food chain. In the morning, many fast-foodies head to McDonald's for the McGriddle, an egg sandwich with a syrup-infused bun.
As for the egg-stuffed waffle, finding out more about won't be as easy as you think, considering the chain's breakfast menu isn’t on Taco Bell's main website.
