Emmys
Archie Panjabi poses with her award for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series at the 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles Reuters

The 2011 Emmy Award nominations were announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on Thursday.

The Emmy Awards are unlike most other award shows, because nominees appear year after year. Sometimes, this means that nominations don't come as a surprise to anyone. Sometimes, new shows get to upset perennials. With the Emmys, TV executives are asked to submit one episode from that year's series for consideration.

Unlike the Oscars, the Emmys feature special categories for Comedies and Dramas, and comedic actors and shows actually stand a chance against their dramatic counterparts in the broader Best categories.

There are a few new shows on the list, such as HBO's popular Game of Thrones, which premiered this summer. AMC's The Killing was not nominated for Best Series, but two of the show's actor are up for the golden awards.

Mad Men, the AMC period piece on advertisting, had the most nominations with 19.

The Best Lead Actor category this year pits a number of former winners against each other. This will surely be an entertaining award show to watch.
