Rhonda Empire Finale
Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday, pictured) may have fallen off the balcony in the “Empire” Season 2 finale after fighting Anika (Grace Gealey). Fox

“Empire” Season 2 concluded with a cliffhanger as Anika and Rhonda battled each other on a balcony. In the final seconds of episode 18, it sounded like at least one of them fell over the railing onto the street below. Viewers won’t know the result of this fight until Season 3, but it looks like we’ve seen the last of one or both of them.

In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Ilene Chaiken said she knows whether either or both were killed in the balcony struggle. However, she wouldn’t say who took the long fall down to the street below.

“All we have to go on right now is the sound of that scream and the look on Andre’s face — and that, to me, says somebody went over that railing. And it would be ludicrous to say that would be a survivable fall!” Chaiken dished with a laugh. “We talked about how high up they are, and we agreed it was somewhere around 30 stories. Assuming one of those ladies went over, she’s in for it.”

Anika (Grace Gealey) and Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) actually fought twice in the Season 2 finale. Rhonda was able to piece together that Anika was the person who pushed her down the stairs earlier in the season. Rhonda, who was pregnant at the time, almost died in the fall and the baby she was carrying didn’t survive. At Lucious’ (Terrence Howard) home, Rhonda confronted Anika, but the family broke up their fight and didn’t believe her accusations about Anika. Rhonda later hunted down Anika again after she married Lucious, and the two squared off on the balcony. Anika admitted to pushing Rhonda just before somebody went over the railing.

The death of either character would have huge implications on the show.

If Rhonda dies, who knows what would happen to Andre (Trai Byers) in Season 3? In Season 2, he experienced the loss of his baby after Rhonda was pushed down the stairs. Andre is in control of his bipolar disorder, but all bets could be off in the event he has to go through another traumatic loss.

If Anika dies, Hakeem will now have lost his child right after Laura (Jamila Velazquez) canceled their wedding. Anika had also just officially became a Lyon, with Lucious marrying her to prevent her from being able to testify against him in court. However, there won’t be any love lost should something have happened to her. Lucious knows she pushed Rhonda and wouldn’t even really kiss her during their wedding ceremony. If she’s gone, it’s one fewer person he has to worry about going to the FBI on him.
