“Empire” Season 3, episode 4 synopsis teases that Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) starts to develop feelings for Nessa (Sierria McClain) but she has eyes for another Lyon. Fox

Love is in the air on Season 3, episode 4 of “Empire” but because it involves the Lyon clan, you know there’s some drama involved. The synopsis and a video preview of next Wednesday’s episode was released, teasing that a few of the Lyons are starting to make some romantic connections.

A synopsis for episode 4 (via TV Guide) states that Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) and Angelo’s (Taye Diggs) spark is growing stronger but Lucious (Terrence Howard) is taking notice. In a promo, Angelo takes Cookie to a fancy event and is heard saying that he believes they could make it work. However, in another point during the short clip Lucious warns Angelo that Cookie always comes back to him.

After getting left at the altar last season, it appears that Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) is ready to move on and sets his sights on new character Nessa (Sierra McClain). The synopsis hints that Nessa might not have the same feelings for Hakeem, and “seems to have eyes for a different Lyon.” Which one, you ask? The episode 4 preview shows the meek and mild Nessa subtly hitting on Andre (Trai Byers).

Next week’s episode of the Fox hip-hop drama won’t be all about making romantic connections. Anika (Grace Gealey) apparently gets her wish and returns to work at Empire but “causes turmoil” as soon as she steps through the doors. Jamal (Jussie Smollett) also makes “a big first step” towards overcoming his post-traumatic stress disorder by finally facing his shooter, Freda Gatz (Bre-Z).

On Tuesday, “Empire” executive producer Sanaa Hamri dished on the Cookie/Angelo storyline telling TV Guide that although most of the characters on the show have a dark and sinister side, Angelo is definitely a good guy this season. “He’s going to be mayor of New York,” Hamri said. “He’s a good guy. We do have characters that are who they are. He just wants to do good. He’s our Obama.”

Hamri also told the outlet that Cookie is still trying to stay away as far away as possible from Lucious and his drama, and realizes that Angelo is the complete opposite of her ex-husband. “When [Cookie] met Lucious, it changes her life foreve,” Hamri said. “When she looks at Angelo he’s the exact opposite of Lucious. In all our lives we meet people we aspire to be, and it’s going to take her down many trials and tribulations as a woman, in terms of what she wants.”

“Empire” Season 3 airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
