During the TCA panel, Taraji P. Henson revealed that she had already filmed scenes with the legendary singer. Henson plays Cookie Lyon on the hip-hop drama. “She was great. She’s fabulous,” Henson said (via Yahoo! TV). “She’s beautiful to look at. She brings a sense of what Mariah brings to the music industry. She brought it to our show. I’m grateful she spent time with little old us.”
“Empire” has become known for snagging high-profile guests stars, and Carey is far from the only celebrity making an appearance on the show’s upcoming season. See the other guest stars below.
It was previously announced that Diggs will play a well-respected and wealthy city councilman named Angelo Dubois. Angelo has a Harvard degree and comes from an affluent family, but decides to forgo making millions by working in a private sector to focus on community organizing and local politics. Diggs’ character has been drawing comparisons to President Barack Obama.
Executive producer Ilene Chaiken, dished about Diggs’ character during the TCAs remaining coy when asked whether Angelo is going to be a new love interest for Cookie. “He certainly would like to be. His story is all about Cookie. It starts as a Jamal story and like everything else, everyone intersects with him,” she said (via Yahoo! McClain joins Season 3 as a young singer named Nessa, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She’s Shine’s (Xzibit) new protégé, but things get messy when Lucious (Terrence Howard) attempts to figure out a way to sign her to his Empire roster.
Montana has been tapped to play Vaughn, a music mogul who runs in Lucious’ inner circle. Entertainment Weekly posed the question that Vaughn could also be another love interest for Cookie.
Not much has been revealed about how Birdman will tie into Season 3, but the rapper will play himself on the show.

Rumors sparked after the “Growing Up Hip Hop” star posted an Instagram photo of him reading an “Empire” script. “That moment when @theoriginalbigdaddy (creator Lee Daniels) hit you up to come read for @EmpireFox,” he captioned the photo.
