England trudged to a 1-0 win against Wales at Wembley, leaving them within a point of qualifying for the European Championships 2012.

Although by no means an impressive performance, England manager Fabio Capello will be happy with the win, secured by Ashley Young's first-half strike. The win saw England move six points clear at the top of Group G and just a draw against Montenegro on October 7 will see them through to the major in Ukraine and Poland.

However, there was none of the zest and movement England displayed against Bulgaria on Friday. Capello's side seems to perform cautiously and poorly at home and the pattern continued as Wales had a few chances to deny victory. Their best chance came with 15 minutes to go when Rob Earnshaw failed to convert a tap in from yards out as he side-footed it over the crossbar.
