Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister to former President John F. Kennedy died Tuesday morning in Hyannis, Mass at 88.

Shriver, died today at 2 a.m. ET at Cape Cod Hospital, according to family statement, the Wall Street Journal reported. A cause of death was not mentioned but she had suffered strokes in recent years, according to the report.

She had been admitted to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis last Friday in critical condition.

She was known for helping found the Special Olympics and for her work with children's charities.

Her immediate family and grandchildren were with her at the time.
