FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Consumer inflation has eased somewhat in the Euro area in April, although it remains at a rather high levels as a result of fast growing prices of energy and food, according to the latest report by Eurostat.

Consumer prices have increased 0.3% in April from march, down from the 0.5% rise posted in the previous month. On the year, prices have risen 3.3%, down from the 3.5% increase posted in march. Excluding food and energy, prices rose 1.6% in from April 2007.

The highest annual increases have been posted by food, 6.0% up, transport and housing; 4.8% up in both cases, while prices for communications dropped 1.6% year on year, and recreation and culture prices eased 0.4%.
