FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - Retail sales have increased above expectations in the Euro Area in May, after a weak performance in April, according to data released by Eurostat.

In May, sales have risen 1.2% from April, while they edged up 0.2% year on year, following a 0.6% monthly decline in April and a 3.0% drop year on year.

Food drinks and tobacco have risen 0.5% month on month, while sales in the non food sector have posted a 1.7% increase. Year on year, food and tobacco sales have declined 1.4% in the euro area, while sales in the non food sector increased 1.1% from May 2007.
