The Hotel Ukraine has been transformed from a five-star hotel to a makeshift morgue and clinic as the violence in Kiev intensified for a third day Thursday.

The hotel is in the heart of Independence Square—ground zero for the so-called “Euromaidan” protests that have gripped Ukraine. Reports indicate that more than 100 people have died in clashes between protesters and riot police in the Ukrainian capital.

Photos from the lobby of the Hotel Ukraine show dead bodies being carried out of the hotel and some of the dead lined up with sheets covering them. In others, medical staff and volunteers tend to the injured who were rushed into the hotel. Some journalists reported protesters were carrying guns and checking their rooms to see if there were government snipers. There were also reports that journalists’ hotel rooms were hit by bullets.

The so-called “Euromaidan” protests began in November after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych nixed a trade agreement with the European Union. The move angered protesters who wanted Ukraine to have closer ties to the EU.
