Liverpool secured a highly controversial victory in the Merseyside derby against ten-man Everton, as they came off with a 2-0 win from Goodison Park.

Everton's Jack Rodwell was sent off in the 23rd minute by referee Martin Atkinson for a challnege for which a foul would have been harsh. He got to the ball before Luis Suarez and won it fairly, and although his follow-through did budge Suarez, the Uruguayan seemed to over-do his reaction. Atkinson had no hesistation in brandishing his red card and his disastrous, inconsistent performance played the decisive role as Everton succumbed to a second defeat in as many games.

Atkinson's performance overshadowed that of Andy Carroll's who scored his first goal of the season, the opener in the game, before Suarez capitalized on a defensive error to add a late second.

Everton fought bravely for majority of the match but the extra work with a man down tired them as the game progressed. Atkinson's performance was dubious as after brandishing the red for Rodwell, he seemed to be inconsistent in calling fouls while let tackles much more offensive than Rodwell's go unpunished. It all annoyed Everton fans at Goodison and Suarez and Craig Bellamy had objects, including coins, bottles, thrown at them while they stood over a corner.

The defeat means Everton sit at 11th in the table, although they have played a game less than who are a point above them. The victory left Liverpool 5th in the standings, level on 7 points with fourth-placed Chelsea, but the Blues play their game in hand against Bolton on Sunday.
