“The Exorcist” Season 2 is really happening! Just recently, FOX released their fall schedule for 2017 and announced that the thriller drama will premiere on Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. EST.

In May, FOX also confirmed their decision to give the creators and cast of “The Exorcist” a chance to redeem themselves in terms of ratings. Prior to the renewal announcement, there were rumors that “The Exorcist” Season 2 will no longer receive the green light from the network because the ratings per episode were consistently down.

According to TV Series Finale, the Geena Davis-starrer premiered with only 2.5 million viewers and a 0.9 demo rating. On its second week, the total number of viewers dropped to only 1.9 million and the demo rating became 0.6. Episodes 7 to 9 received the lowest viewership ranging between 1.6 million and 1.68 million and a rating of 0.6 to 0.64. “The Exorcist” Season 1 closed with 1.7 million viewers and a 0.6 demo rating.

In fact, even executive producer Jeremy Slater was unsure of the show’s fate. In December of last year, he spoke with Deadline to say that they have more stories to tell, but they are not sure if Season 1 would be the end. “I don’t know if this is the end of ‘The Exorcist’ story, but I definitely hope it’s not because I love these characters and this world and I have a lot more stories to tell. But if this is all we get, then I feel we went out swinging on a real high note,” he said.

Earlier this month, it was also confirmed that Davis, Alan Ruck, Brianne Howey and Hannah Kasulka will no longer return to Season 2. After all, the upcoming episodes will center on new characters. But according to TV Line, Father Tomas (Alfonso Herrera), Brother Bennett (Kurt Egyiawan) and Father Marcus (Ben Daniels) will all return to the upcoming installments.

As of late, FOX has not yet announced how many episodes “The Exorcist” Season 2 will have, but it is highly likely that it will also have 10 episodes just like Season 1.
