The Malaysian airliner MH-17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine by pro-Russian militants on Thursday, killing all 295 people aboard, a Ukrainian interior ministry official said. Dozens of bodies were scattered around the smouldering wreckage of a passenger jet that crashed in a field in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, a Reuters reporter said. An emergency services rescue worker said at least 100 bodies had so far been found at the scene, near the village of Grabovo, and that debris from the wreckage was spread across an area up to about 15 km (nine miles) in diameter. The first alleged eyewitness photos of the Malaysian Airlines plane crash in Ukraine have surfaced.

An image tweeted by the Russian media agency RT at 12:12 p.m. ET (posted above) shows two people in sandals standing atop a broad metal chunk. The debris purportedly is from the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777, which was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 295 people aboard when it crashed Thursday in Ukraine near the Russian border after reportedly being hit by a missile.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed that it lost contact with flight MH17 about 30 miles from the Russian-Ukraine border. The airlines said that the last known position of the plane was over Ukrainian airspace. CNN reported that Ukrainian officials said a Russian fighter jet shot down a Ukrainian jet Wednesday as it flew in Ukrainian airspace.

The airlines said the plane was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew members. Dozens of bodies are scattered around what is believed to be the wreckage of the jet near the village of Grabovo, according to a Reuters correspondent.

RT posted another image from the wreckage site on its Twitter feed.
