Preview: Michael Schumacher made a major statement of intent as he set the fastest lap right at the death of Saturday's qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix. But unfortunately for the seven-times world champion, his brilliant lap will still only see him start down in sixth, with Mark Webber stepping into pole position. The five-place grid penalty for the German a result of him crashing into the back of Bruno Senna at the Spanish Grand Prix.

But the 43-year-old admitted that his penalty had taken little of the shine off his memorable lap, especially after increasing criticism of his performances, even from within his own Mercedes team.

It is simply a wonderful feeling to set pole after such a long time, and particularly here in Monaco, he said, according to the Formula One website.

On an impressive day for the team, Schumacher's Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg will lineup alongside Webber on the grid. Lewis Hamilton, Romain Grosjean and Fernando Alonso make up the rest of the top five.

It was a disappointing day for world championship hopefuls Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button, who will start from ninth and 12th on the grid, respectively.

It was a strong showing by Ferrari, though, with under pressure Felipe Massa starting just two slots behind teammate Alonso, in seventh.

There is little doubt, however, that it is Webber who will now be a strong favorite for his second victory in the principality, where overtaking opportunities are few and far between on the narrow streets.

Yet, both Rosberg and Hamilton will know that a lighting getaway off the line could propel either into a strong position to claim the checkered flag.
