Facebook is useful for more than just posting photos from your Saturday night antics. With 800 million followers, the social network acts as a gauge for what is on people's minds and lips.

On Wednesday, Facebook unveiled its Memology list - an analytical look at what people were talking about on Facebook in 2011.

Facebook's data team was able to gather this information by pulling key phrases from users' posts. The Top 10 Global Topics were determined based on the number of likes clicked on subjects this year.

Top 10 Global Topics:

1. Death of Osama bin Laden

2. Packer win the Super Bowl

3. Case Anthony found not guilty

4. Charlie Sheen

5. Death of Steve Jobs

6. The Royal Wedding

7. Death of Amy Winehouse

8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

9. Military operations begin in Libya

10. Hurricane Irene

The death of Osama bin Laden was by far the most popular event of the year, followed by the Super Bowl win and the Casey Anthony verdict.

Popular memes, or cultural trends, for 2011 included: planking (short-lived fad), LMS (like my status) TBH (to be honest) and Skillrex (music producer). Planking, the act of posing for pictures while lying down on unusual objections or in strange locations, was very popular in May and then fell off the radar. Terms like LMS and TBH were typically used in comments on posts. Skillrex became popular after his 2011 tour, a collaboration with Korn, and record label launch

The social media giant stated Canada accounts for 18 million active users per month, making it one of the biggest countries on Facebook on a per capita basis.

The Facebook team also calculated the most popular names in pop culture.
